Living in Port Credit
Port Credit began as a trading post and harbour community and was its own town until 1974. The main intersection is Hurontario Street and Lakeshore Road, a short walk from the harbour, and the village keeps a small-town feel with independent shops, restaurants and patios. The Credit River, parks and the waterfront trail give residents plenty of outdoor space.
Homes in Port Credit
Housing includes older detached homes and bungalows, many renovated or rebuilt, plus townhomes and condominiums, with newer waterfront towers in recent developments. Port Credit is in Mississauga, so Ontario land transfer tax applies but the City of Toronto's municipal land transfer tax does not. Buyers coming from Toronto should check property tax, school boards and local planning rules.
Getting around
Port Credit GO Station on the Lakeshore West line connects to Union Station, and MiWay buses serve Lakeshore Road and Hurontario Street. The Hazel McCallion Line, the Hurontario light rail line, is planned to end at Port Credit GO. As of autumn 2026 it is still under construction with no public opening date. Check gotransit.com and miway.ca for current service.
Parks, shops and food
The harbour, the Port Credit Lighthouse, the Credit River and lakefront parks are the main draws, along with a walkable Lakeshore Road lined with restaurants, cafes and shops. The waterfront trail runs through the area for walking and cycling.
Schools and community
Port Credit is served by the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, plus French-language and private options. Verify boundaries with the board.
Buying or selling in Port Credit: what to check
Because Port Credit is in Mississauga, property tax is billed by the City of Mississauga and Peel Region, and Toronto's municipal land transfer tax does not apply. For new-build or assignment purchases near the waterfront, ask your lawyer to review the builder's agreement and occupancy timelines. Sellers can highlight the harbour, GO access and walkable Lakeshore Road.
Because Port Credit is in Mississauga, Ontario land transfer tax applies but Toronto’s municipal land transfer tax does not. Estimate your costs with the mortgage payment calculator and the land transfer tax calculator.
